Saint-Saëns: Symphony No 3, ‘Organ Symphony’
The orchestra falls silent and with a single majestic chord, the organ makes the very air itself shimmer and ring. Saint-Saens’s Organ Symphony never loses its power to thrill, especially when heard on Symphony Hall’s world famous organ. It’s conducted today by one of French music’s greatest living interpreters, Yan-Pascal Tortelier, who also introduces a fabulous rarity: Roussel’s Evocations, a sumptuous choral symphony swathed in silken colours and shamelessly exotic melodies.
