Organ on the move

From Aachen to Cologne - the organ of the Trinity Church Aachen finds a new home in Trinity Church Cologne

In general an organ is designed and built for a specific room. Architecture and dimesions of the space are commanding factors. Musical taste and acoustics of the room determin specification and voicing of the instrument.

For an almost new instrument like the organ of the Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) in Aachen, built in 1987, it is rather unusual to be on the move. But the church in Aachen lost its parish over the last decade. In this light the need for an organ in the Trinitatiskirche (also Trinity Church) in Cologne might be seen as good luck.

The organ could be moved almost without changes. A new floor in the organ loft had to be provided in Cologne as the organ rests on top of the existing parapet. The church in Cologne has got much brighter acoustics so the voicing had to be adjusted without changing the original tonal character too much.

It will and should surely remain visible that the organ has got a 'history', that it has been designed for a different room. Also it is without question that tonal character and stoplist of the instrument are those of 1987 and not of a new organ. But the new blend of organ and room is a happy one.

We are most grateful and glad that this 'child' from our workshop found its new home in the Trinitatiskirche in Colgne.
